What is Amateur Radio?
Amateur radio, sometimes known as ‘ham’ radio, is a technical hobby in which licensed persons communicate with each other using radio equipment. The hobby is enjoyed by people around the world. One must take an exam in order to obtain a licence and be issued with a unique callsign. There are an estimated 2 million radio amateurs in the world.

Radio hams operate on specific bands of frequencies. The hobby is known as ‘amateur’ radio because it is non-commercial. It is not permitted to play music, advertise or run a business on ham radio frequencies. But radio hams can speak to each other all over the world and even to astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Several ‘special events’ occur throughout the year in which radio clubs operate from places such as castles, lighthouses, museums and such.
